VS. BURNOUT.

The modern workforce is experiencing an unprecedented crisis of engagement. Two terms dominate the conversation: "Quiet Quitting" and "Burnout." While they often look identical from the outside—missed deadlines, lack of enthusiasm, and detachment—their psychological roots are profoundly different.

The Anatomy of Burnout

Burnout is a clinical syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion, increased mental distance from one's job, and reduced professional efficacy.

Crucially, burnout happens to people who care too much. It is the result of a high-achieving archetype—like the Operator or the Catalyst—pushing themselves beyond human limits without adequate support or reward.

The Mechanics of Quiet Quitting

Quiet quitting, conversely, is an active, conscious boundary-setting mechanism. It is the rejection of the "hustle culture" mentality. It means fulfilling the exact requirements of your job description and nothing more. No late-night emails, no taking on extra projects without compensation, and no sacrificing mental health for corporate gain.

Unlike burnout, which is a collapse, quiet quitting is a defense mechanism. It is often a rational response to an irrational environment where the psychological contract between employer and employee has been broken.
